Friendship at Christmas

Christmas is a time where we are suppose to give thanks for the things in our life. Christmas isn’t about all the presents or the things we want. Its about appreciation for the things that we are lucky enough to have and the family and friends that are in our lives. So at Christmas friendship is very important and showing those friends that you are thankful for them is important too because it makes them feel special and shows that you really care about them.

Cindy Lou Who from the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one of the only ones in the movie who thinks that Christmas isn’t all about presents. She sees that Christmas is about being thankful and that the Grinch just needs a friend, someone who will be nice to him and make him feel appreciated.

“But The Book of Who says this too: ‘No matter how different a Who may appear, he will always be welcome with holiday cheer.”

Friendship with Monsters

“The different accidents of life are not so changeable as the feelings of human nature. I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this I had deprived myself of rest and health.I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart. Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room, and continued a long time traversing my bedchamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep.”(Frankenstein, Shelley, Ch. 5)

In this quote Victor the creator of the Monster runs away from his creation and this makes the Monster feel hated and as if he weren’t wanted. So because no one wants to be his friend he hates all humans and wants to ruin their lives. But if only someone had decided to be friends with him then he would feel loved and he wouldn’t want to ruin the lives of humans. So all it takes to help make a Monster good is a little bit of friendship.

If you are kind and show friendship to someone then the deed will be returned. Someone who is hated or feels disliked only needs someone to be friends with them and their whole outlook can be changed.

Friendship can make a huge difference in someones life. It can mean the world to someone who is hated if you just try to be friends with them. They can be changed too, and that would have happened in Frankenstein if someone had just been kind enough to be the monsters friend. The monster wouldn’t have killed anyone if someone like Victor had just been kind enough to be his friend.

Friendship between humans and their pets

My Best Friend

By: Abby Jenkins
Black and White
Thick and furry
Fast as the wind
Always in a hurry
Couple of spots
Rub my ears
Always comes his name he hears
Loves his ball it’s his favorite thing
What’s most fun for him? Everything!
Great big tongue that licks my face
Has a crate his very own space
Big brown eyes like moon pies
He’s my friend till the very end!

The saying goes that “man is dog’s best friend”. Others find that other pets are also up to the task. The companionship that animals offer is different from human interaction. Human communicate with speech and although this is an advanced form of communication, it has its limitations. Sometimes people struggle to say the right thing when what we really need is to be simply there for each other. Because animals cannot talk they are superior to humans in detecting the feelings of others. A pet may be able to offer a level of companionship that is deeper and more satisfying than human interaction.

Pets are always there to comfort you and they somehow always make you fell better when you are feeling down. Loosing a pet can be very hard on people because they tend to build very close bonds with their animals. A friendship with a pet is one of the strongest bonds that humans have with animals and when you loose that pet you loose that friendship and it can be really hard on some people.

Time in Friendship

“Time doesn’t take away from friendship, nor does separation.”

― Tennessee WilliamsMemoirs

It takes time to build a good strong true friendship and usually all of that time put into building a friendship ends up paying off. Through that time you build memories with your friends and once those memories are built you can look back on them and laugh and have the best times together.

Time- the system of those sequential relations that any event has to any other, as past, present, or future; indefinite and continuous duration regarded as that in which events succeed one another.

Friendship- the state of being a friend; association as friends: to value a person’s friendship.

The definition of time and the definition of friendship combined together define a good friendship.

We all value people’s friendships differently but usually with time a friendship is valued more.

Sacrifice in Friendship

Now I know you are probably thinking that there aren’t sacrifices in friendship but rather ones to keep friendship, but any sacrifice to keep a friendship is a sacrifice in friendship. You could sacrifice a friend in order to keep a better friend or you could sacrifice a boyfriend or girlfriend in order to keep your friends. Sometimes friendships can be hard but any true friend who is always there for you is better than any boyfriend, girlfriend, or “friend” (fake friend).

“It’s not hard to decide what you want your life to be about. What’s hard, she said, is figuring out what you’re willing to give up in order to do the things you really care about.” ― Shauna NiequistBittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace, and Learning the Hard Way

This quote can be connected to friendship because all it is saying is you have to figure out how important friendship is in your life and what you are willing to give up in order to keep that friendship or if somebody comes between you and your best friend are you willing to give that somebody up.

“I guess that’s just part of loving people: You have to give things up. Sometimes you even have to give them up.” ― Lauren OliverDelirium

There will be boyfriends and girlfriends that you will love but not all of those relationship will work out and some of them may even come down to choosing between your friends and your “love”. One very important thing though is that you should never let love come between a friendship. And unless you want to lose your friends over love you should always choose your friendships before boys.

From a girls view, friendship should always come before boys because your girls will always be there for you as long as you don’t ruin the friendship over a boy.

“Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.”
― J.M. BarriePeter Pan

If you connect this quote to friendship it is basically saying that you can have the best friendships ever only if you are willing to sacrifice for that friendship.

Friendship in Marriage

The word “friendship” conjures up thoughts of honesty, vulnerability, companionship, and mutual respect. It also implies a certain outlaying of time and energy. C.S. Lewis said of friendship: “It is when we are doing things together that friendship springs up – painting, sailing ships, praying, philosophizing, and fighting shoulder to shoulder. Friends look in the same direction.”

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”

― Friedrich Nietzsche

In order to get through the good and bad times with your partner you need to have a good friendship and be able to help each other through!

I find that friendship before marriage makes for a happier longer relationship!

“Marriage without friendship cannot work in our culture,” says Bill Hanawalt, who has conducted pre-marital and marital counseling for 30 years as the executive pastor of the Vineyard Christian Church of Evanston, Il. “Friendship has to be nourished and nurtured regularly or it faces the danger of becoming a business relationship. I have seen many distant and business-like marriages where careers have developed and children have come into the picture, and the priority of emotional connection has been left to die on the vine. Couples that don’t give attention to developing their friendship often come apart. It also creates an opening for marital infidelity.”

In life you never want to just jump into something that could in the long run have a bad outcome. That is why I believe that it is important to be friends with your partner to be, before you jump right into a relationship and later on marriage. Having a good strong friendship before a relationship will help a couple to last longer and have more fun together. These are just my beliefs on marriage and what role friendship plays in marriage.

Love in Friendship

A true strong Friendship has love in it no matter what. You will always be there for your true friends and that shows love.

“Thank goodness for best friends. For true friends, the ones who love you no matter what.”

― Lauren ClarkStay Tuned

My true friends have seen me at both my best and at my worst and they have stuck with me through everything and that shows that we have good strong friendships and that we love each other. Even though we have silly fights or sometimes one of us will have a complete melt down and just cry to the others we still love each other. We have our weak, strong, and crazy moments but we all still stay there for each other and show our love and support.

“… a true friend has your best interests at heart and the pluck to tell you what you need to hear.”
― E.A. BucchianeriBrushstrokes of a Gadfly

True friends will love you and show this love by telling you things that you may not want to hear but are completely true. They will also tell you embarrassing things. All of those are the moments that you are really glad that they are your friend and they truly love you. This love in Friendship is a hard thing to build with someone and it takes time but once you build that love you enjoy every moment together so much more.

A true friend will always love you for who your are, and you should never have to change in order to keep a friendship.

Friendship in Life

You’ve got a friend in me
You’ve got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you’re miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you’ve got a friend in me
Yeah, you’ve got a friend in me

You’ve got a friend in me
You’ve got a friend in me
If you’ve got troubles,I’ve got ’em too
There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you
We stick together and can see it through
Cause you’ve got a friend in me
You’ve got a friend in me

Some other folks might be
A little bit smarter than I am
Bigger and stronger too
Maybe
But none of them will ever love you
The way I do, it’s me and you
Boy, and as the years go by
Our friendship will never die
You’re gonna see it’s our destiny
You’ve got a friend in me
You’ve got a friend in me

Having good friends in life is very important because they get you through the rough times and you never want to think about a day without them.

You’ve got a friend in me

In life it is always important to have at least one or two friends that you can really count on to be there with you through everything. For me I have my best friend since we were one. We have always been best friends and I hope that we always will be. He is always there for me and I am always there for him. He is a true friend in deed and I am able to count on him through think and thin, and like the song says I hope that “our friendship will never die”.

Etymology of Friendship

Etymology:

Friendship (n.)

friendship (n.) Old English freondscipe; see friend (n.) + -ship.

cronyism (n.) 1840, “friendship,” from crony + -ism. Meaning “appointment of friends to important positions, regardless of ability” is originally American English, from c.1950.

Literary Examples:

“For friendship maketh indeed a fair day in the affections, from storm and tempests; but it maketh daylight in the understanding, out of darkness, and confusion of thoughts.”

The Essays by Bacon, Sir Francis
“I do not reproach you, monsieur,” said D’Artagnan; “’tis only because Monsieur de la Fere has spoken of friendship that I question your conduct.”
Twenty Years After by Dumas, Alexandre
“He then launched forth into a panegyric on Allworthy’s goodness; into the highest encomiums on his friendship; and concluded by saying, he should never forgive his brother for having put the place which he bore in that friendship to a hazard.”
The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling by Fielding, Henry
Common Usage:
Friendship is most commonly used to describe someone who is there when you need them the most and they can usually make you feel better. The relationship between 2 or more people and the trust that you have between each other.
My own short story:
I know that friendship has been very important to me during hard time. One example of a good friendship that I have had was in 11th grade. The Newtown school shooting had happened earlier that day and my mom was away skiing and toward the end of the school day I found out that my dad was at the school helping the children that were still alive. This was very hard for me to think about and I didn’t want to go home to my empty house so my good friend invited me over so that I had somewhere to go and be with my friend rather than being alone. So this was a very important friendship to me and I treasure moments like this when my friends are there for me.

When friends can sit and silence and still enjoy each other you know that you are true friends and just enjoy each other’s company and you don’t always have to be doing something to have fun.
