Defeat in Sports

For thousands of years sports have existed as a healthy competition between two parties, a sort of peaceful war. Sports, as in any competition require planning and strategy to best your opponent. While there are often ties in sports, there are more often winners and, in turn, losers. Being defeated is a difficult thing to deal with, a big pill to swallow, if you will. Many do not take defeat well and respond to it with hatred. Some even cheat to avoid defeat, or cheat to obtain defeat (as we saw with the White Socks in the black box scandal in the 1919 world series).File:1906 Athens stadium.jpg

Pictured above is one of the first olympic games. Though it was an unofficial olympics, over twenty countries participated, including the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany. France officially one the tournament with 40 medals total (15 Gold), the United States took second with 24 medals (12 gold) and Greece took third with 35 medals (8 Gold).

  1. You have a nice picture, some history, but I have little sense of you in this post. What do you think about defeat in sports? What do mean by bringing in a cheating scandal to explain defeat? Why these Olympic games?
